Arthritis can be a pain in the neck... or back, hands, or joints. It can
affect people of any age. The physicians of University Rheumatology Associates
specialize in treating arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles and
bones. These physicians, Elizabeth L. Turner, M.D., F.A.C.R., and Michael Brit,
M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.R., are board-certified in both internal medicine and
rheumatology.
“There are more than 100 different types of arthritis that can affect
children and adults of all ages. In many cases, correct diagnosis provides
appropriate treatment and, in the case of rheumatoid arthritis, prevents or
decreases future disability,” Dr. Brit explains.
Dr. Turner received her medical degree from East Tennessee State University’s
Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City, where she also completed a
residency in internal medicine. She continued her training with a fellowship in
rheumatology from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville.
“We very much enjoy the practice of rheumatology and consider it a privilege
to serve the community in this area. It is our hope that we can work with our
patients who suffer from rheumatic diseases to improve their quality of life,”
said Dr. Turner.
Dr. Brit earned his undergraduate, graduate and medical degrees from the
Russian State Medical University. He also completed training at the National
Research Center for Transplant Surgery in Moscow. His training continued with
the completion of an intership and a residency in internal medicine at
Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey and a fellowship in rheumatology at
Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.
Among the types of rheumatic diseases treated by University Rheumatology
Associates are rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing
spondylitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, osteoarthritis,
inflammatory muscle diseases, vasculitis, gout, pseudogout, and osteoporosis.
The two physicians offer traditional therapies for rheumatic diseases, as well
as newer biologic therapies and also perform such procedures as joint and soft
tissue injections.
