Neonatology Shannon Rigler, MD

About / Overview

Dr. Shannon Rigler, our Medical Director of Neonatology, joined the Children’s Hospital at Erlanger in 2021. Prior to Erlanger, she served as a physician in the United States Navy for 17 years. While in the military, Dr. Rigler earned the rank of Commander and served as the Medical Director to the Defense Health Agency’s largest neonatal ICU at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA.  

Dr. Rigler completed Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship in 2013 at Walter Reed’s National Capital Consortium in Bethesda, MD. She continued her academic pursuits as a clinical research fellow at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development investigating the genetics of rare birth defects to include heterotaxy, prune belly syndrome, esophageal atresia, and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Her prior academic appointments include Assistant Professorship of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University where she sat on the Pediatrics Residency Competency Committee. Currently, she serves as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.  

As the Southeastern’s representative to the Oversite Committee for the State of Tennessee’s Initiative for Perinatal Quality Care (TIPQC), Dr. Rigler is committed to improving healthcare outcomes for the region’s children.
