Boating and Open Water Safety

Summer is here, meaning families will be spending more time enjoying lakes, rivers, and oceans. Remember these safety tips when boating.

  1. Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when boating. Be sure it’s the right fit for your child’s weight and activity.
  2. Keep weak and non-swimmers in a life jacket while on docks and at marinas. Swimming aids like water wings and inflatable water rings do not prevent drowning.
  3. Make sure the life jackets are the right fit for your child. Have child hold arms straight up over their head, grasp the tops of the arms openings and gently pull up. Make sure the jacket does not ride up over child’s chin or face.
  4. Young kids are at a higher risk of hypothermia so take extra precautions to keep them warm.
  5. Learn basic water rescue skills and CPR
  6. Follow the U.S. Coast Guard recommendations for boating safety.
