Tips for Swimming Safety

Whether you’re headed to the beach or a dip in your community or backyard pool, these swimming tips can help you have fun in the sun. Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death among children ages 1-4.

  1. Watch kids when they are in or around water. Keep young or weak swimmers within an arms reach of an adult.
  2. Choose a Water Watcher. When several adults are present, choose one to be responsible for watching children in or near the water for a certain period of time, approximately 20 -30 minutes.
  3. Teach children how to swim. Enroll children in swim lessons when they are ready.
  4. Make sure kids learn these 5 water survival skills:

    • Step or jump into water over their head and return to the surface
    • Turnaround in the water and look for ways to get safely to the side of the pool
    • Float or tread water
    • Combine breathing with forward movement in the water
    • Exit the pool

  5. Teach children that swimming in open water is different than swimming a pool. Learn and teach the differences.
  6. Learn CPR and basic water rescue skills.
