Types of ResourcesHypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a disorder in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick for no apparent reason. This thickening makes it difficult for the heart to effectively pump blood. HCM is one of the most common genetic heart conditions affecting more 1 in 500 people in the general population. While there is no cure, new treatments can successfully manage this condition, greatly improving the quality of life of people with HCM.
Symptoms
HCM often comes with no symptoms, however some people experience the following:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Palpitations
- Light-headedness
- Fainting and blackouts (Syncope)
Diagnosis
If you’ve had a relative with HCM, be sure to get screened by a physician knowledgeable in heart disorders. Your screening should include:
- EKG/ECG
- Echocardiogram
- A full cardiac check-up
Treatment
- Surgery such as septal reduction therapy
- Implantable device such as a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
- Medications to slow or regulate the heart rate
- Cardioversion or Pulmonary vein isolation/Maze procedure for treating atrial fibrillation related to HCM
- Heart transplant (in rare cases where HCM is severe)
